Trillion Red: Metaphere

Trillion Red is the solo project of San Fransisco musician Patrick Brown, and is described as dark progressive avant-garde metal. Metaphere is the first full-length album of Trillion Red, following an EP entitled Two Tongues. It deals with the struggle between darkness and light, and the musical moods within are as polar as the themes it deals with one moment a quiet, pensive and slow musical theme and the next it is swallowed up by chaotic heavy waves of crashing sound. The effect of mellow ambience being interrupted by emotive, disorienting skirmishes of dissonant sound can be quite odd sometimes, and may not be well received by everyone, while others may find this to be a work of genius. The effect of this juxtaposition between calming and crushing is undeniably provocative and will either excite or repel. I believe this may be a favorite of the year for many fans of avant-garde metal, but I have to be honest and say that for me the experience was just ok. Still, however, it is impressive what one man can do, and I must admit that the sound of this album seems quite unique to me.
