Acid Witch: Witchtanic Hellucinations

A quick look at the Goblin-Witch on the cover and the cackling spoken intro that promises Witchtanic Hellucinations, will let you know that back in 2008 Acid Witch weren't taking themselves too seriously. However delve into the other twelve tracks on W-H and there was no denying that the death/doom they churn out is no frivolous laugh-fest. The lyrics verge on the silly and the mix of spoken-growl vocals and Witch like high pitched contributions means we are never going to be headed into high art here. Instead however Acid Witch grind and churn their way through some gargantuan riffs and mighty drumming to create an album that leaves you gasping for breath at its conclusion.

Not as slow and tortuous as much in the doom sphere, the likes of "The Black Witch" simply romps along, alternating between warbling guitar lines and crushing riffs to concoct a noxious potion. Something which the aptly named "Beastly Brew" highlights through feedback and wailing guitar which alternates back and forth from speaker to speaker to leave you joyously off-kilter.

Not afraid to use spooky effects and ham it up, "Cauldron Cave" curses it's way into a schlocking keyboard intro, before a wall of sludge rolls out of the CD player onto your floor, daring you to wade through it. From there the marvellously titled "Witches Tits" and "Broomstick Bitch" turn up the doom infested intensity and "October 31st" concludes a devilishly effective romp in fine, corpse rotting style.

In the wrong hands silly song titles and over the top theatrics can and often do result in car-crash albums. Witchtanic Hellucinations however knows exactly what it is and what it is, is death/doom of the highest order!

Acid Witch have released another full length album Stoned and two EP's Witch House and Midnight Mass, since the initial release of this album. However if you missed out on this band's uncompromising, seductively silly debut, this Hell's Headbangers reissue will see you right.
