Downplay: Beyond The Machine

Long ago in what seems a lifetime now, America produced a swathe of bands that sounded pretty much like the next. All trying to capture the formula created by the likes of Nickelback, Theory Of a Dead Man and Breaking Benjamin, hoping for that lucrative record company push. Adding to that tsunami of bands is Downplay; it's all pretty non- offensive rock for the jilted generation, sitting in their bedrooms contemplating the finer issues concerning life, love and eye make-up. While tracks like 'I'm Not Over You Yet' meander along with the dreaded melancholy of a slapped hoodie, the rest of the album stumbles along a well trodden path. A cover of 'Cruel Summer' by British 80's girl band Bananarama is certainly one of those 'what the fuck???' moments and pretty much sums up this whole mish mash of an album. Downplay are sadly trying to jump on a bandwagon long passed through town, while not particularly bad this album is something you've heard a million times before done a million times better. Nice try, let's see if they can find their own sound and not become the Rock Chameleon's they quite simply are, a t-shirt once proclaimed, 'Same shit different day'!
