69 Eyes, The: X

Finland's 69 Eyes tenth aptly named album X, continues the success of 2009's Back In Blood. This time around the gothic themed, Elvis lovin' lead singer Jyrki has toned things down somewhat and concentrated on getting the songs sounding memorable. The 69 Eyes/Americana theme sprinkles through elements of the album and the first thing that grasps you is the lighter atmosphere. Not that the gothic theme is lost, however proceedings have been given an uplifting feel which results in a positive sounding album. 'Tonight' is a sure fire chart worrier along with 'Black' and Jyrki's low toned vocals vibrating the bass bins. Speaking to Jyrki a few years back he stated that he wanted to write memorable melodic songs, well on 'Red' he's certainly achieved that. Every track on X would not feel out of place on an American road movie, with the guitars producing a rounded sound combined with Scandinavia's interpretation of the USA's top down, long road ahead feel. Diehard fans need not worry though, 69 Eyes have not sensationally left their Gothic roots in a shallow grave, on 'I Love The Darkness In You' & 'Boarderline' elements of their past are still haunting them.

X is a decent celebration of what 69 Eyes have achieved to date, a strong album worthy of your time. If Elvis was alive today and wanted to produce a Metal album I have no doubt this is very close to how it would sound. Dust down the Raybans, slap some black lipstick on, 69 Eyes are back in all their slightly lit dark glory!

69 Eyes, The: X

My Score:

Wow, for once there's a press release that doesn't go way over the top and actually offers some fairly truthful information. According to Nuclear Blast X, " clearly starts the band on a new path and sounds completely fresh and ambitious. It's more melodic than its predecessor, the Hollywood-gone glam Back In Blood. It's also some of the most catchy and hooky Goth'n'Roll you have ever heard." That isn't to say that the 69 Eyes have gone all Journey on us but this is a highly melodic record from "Love Runs Away" all the way to "When A Love Comes To An End". Arguably "Black" is the most typical 69 Eyes track yet it still displays a radio-friendly vibe to it. It's also a call to arms to the Goth hordes who follow the band and gently leads them into the band's new direction which is nowhere near Jazz Odyssey territory but more of a subtle repositioning of a dependable group.
