Smile Empty Soul: 3's
If you're sentimental about the whole grunge music thingy that took the world by storm two decades ago, or if you think that Nickelback would be a damn fine band had they been just a tad heavier and "dirtier", then Smile Empty Soul's new album called 3's may make your dreams come true.
In fact, 3's is filled with better melodies than any Nickelback album so far. Just listen to songs like "Afterlife", "Carve", "Warning", "Basement", "Hard Biter" or the gorgeous little ballad "Hiding Place". They are all rock superhits waiting to be discovered by some ballsy radio station that would play them over and over again to give them sufficient exposure to the mainstream audience. Ah, scratch that, it won't happen. The band's one major problem is, perhaps, that they insist on using way too many swear words to be really loved by the modern radio. Also they don't seem to be interested in adopting the image of sensitive and pretty pin-up rock guys and remain the same sad, hairy dudes their fans know and love since day one. This is exactly what makes them more interesting than the likes of Nickelback or modern day Bon Jovi in MY eyes, but hey – I'm not exactly the mainstream audience that could go and buy 3 million copies of 3's and change the guys' lives, am I?
What I can do, though, is keep on praising this album any chance I have and telling everyone who wants to listen what a cool band Smile Empty Soul still is after all these years (they were formed in 1998, you see). Some of the oldest fans of the band may miss their trademark "rough and wild" songs on the newest album, but the nervous "Sleep Deprivation" should be some sort of consolation even for them.
And who knows what sort of craziness Smile Empty Soul comes up with on their next release?
