Gabriel, Peter: So-Classic Albums (Blu-ray)

The latest installment of the Eagle Rock 'Classic Albums' series takes a look at the 1986 release from Peter Gabriel titled So. At the time, the singer was a very respected part of the rock community thanks to his time spent in the early years of Genesis, as well as a growing solo career that saw decent success up to that point. With So, Gabriel took things to another level and attained superstar status. Over a year in the making, So was meticulously worked on by Gabriel, producer Daniel Lanois, engineer Kevin Killen, and musicians such as Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta, Manu Katche and others. Complete with interviews of all involved, this Blu-ray release discusses many of the songs of So, such as "Sledgehammer", "Red Rain", "Don't Give Up", "Big Time", "In Your Eyes", and more. Gabriel and Lanois especially describe the painstaking process of conceptualizing the songs and using new studio techniques to make them the most spectacular they could possibly be. Elements such as Levin's bass licks and Marotta & Katche's drum beats are looked at in-depth as well, so if you are a real fan of this album and want to know all the nuts & bolts of how it was created, you'll want to check this documentary out. Plenty of live clips are sprinkled throughout, making for a fun and informative look at one of the great albums of the 1980s. Eagle Rock as always gives great attention to detail, with crystal clear high-definition video (especially on the newer interview footage) and sparkling audio.
