Polarization: Chasing the Light

Angular, instrumental progressive metal mixes with electronica on the debut from the California trio Polarization. Chasing the Light (out now on Mediaskare) features 11 tracks that show a band well versed in progressive rock, the new metal flavor of the month 'djent', as well as ambient & electronic styles. Lots of deep, fat, bass & guitar riffs pound, blast, and ricochet all throughout each of these songs, as fluttering synths and mechanized drum fills make up the rest of the blueprint. You can hear the influence of Meshuggah, Scale the Summit, and Cynic at various points, but the band seems to be desperately seeking their own sound, which has to be commended. Hottest tracks are "Reanimate", with its blazing guitar solos, the thundering "Damages", the complex "Solar Attack", and the multifaceted and quite melodic title track, which at times almost crosses into some of the more adventurous Between the Buried and Me territory.

Overall, Chasing the Light is quite enjoyable. Yeah, there are some moments here that can get redundant, but you have to appreciate the eclectic nature of these songs and the talent of the three musicians. Definitely a band to keep an eye on.
