Lambs is the new EP from Tennessee act Laser Flames on the Great Big News, who officially have one of the strangest band names you are ever going to come across. Their music on this 4 song release is just as bizarre, as they jump back and forth between stoner, Southern Rock, mathcore, death metal, black metal, and melodic heavy rock. A tune like "Monster Truth" actually works quite well, with dueling melodic male & female vocals soaring over the top of groove laden doom/stoner riffs and lots of atmosphere, while "Not Living" is a sort of Mastodon/Metallica/The Gathering mish-mash of styles that is as exhilarating as it is perplexing. "Dead River" might be my favorite of the four, a tasty Black Sabbath-meets-Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern doom track with those strong female and male vocals again fighting for supremacy, but I'm not sure what the band were thinking on the noisy, chaotic "Faith of the Blackened Heart", which mixes gutteral death metal growls, black metal shrieks, blast beats, and dissonant mathcore complexity with some of the more grinding sludge. It's a mess, and quite frankly sounds out of place here. Otherwise, the other 3 tracks are strong enough, but you can clearly hear that this band hasn't yet found its direction yet, though the talent seems to be there.
