Doors, The: Live at the Bowl '68 (Blu-ray)

On June 5, 1968 , The Doors (along with Steppenwolf & The Chambers Brothers) played to a large audience at The Hollywood Bowl, which was captured on film and remains to this day perhaps the best concert documentation of the band. Using the original camera negatives, the film has been completely restored, and the audio remixed & mastered from the original multi-tracks by engineer Bruce Botnick. Also included are three previously unreleased tracks from the event, also restored so the full concert can now be enjoyed in its entirety.

From start to finish, Live at the Bowl '68 shows The Doors at their primal, spontaneous best. Jim Morrison is unpredictable throughout, the mysterious yet violent man at the microphone, while bandmates Robbie Krieger, Ray Manzarek, and John Densmore lay down the majestic sounds. Many of their greatest songs up to that point were played that night, including "Moonlight Drive", "Light My Fire". "Alabama Song", and "Hello I Love You", but it's the lengthy, dramatic pieces such as "When the Music's Over", "The End" and chilling cuts "Horse Latitudes", "A Little Game", "Spanish Caravan", and "The Hill Dwellers" that really are the meat and potatoes of this show, which feature Morrison at his venemous best. He has the audience in the palm of his hand that night, but you had a sense that many were just as much entertained as they were leery of just what the singer would say, scream, or do at any time during the performance. Unpredictable, but at the top of his game.

Some of the specs of the Blu-Ray release include a 16x9 high-definition digital transfer with a stereo and 5.1 audio soundtrack. Plenty of bonus material to enjoy here as well, especially a short called "Reworking The Doors," an in-depth look at how the film was restored. If you can only have one video release of The Doors, this is the one you want, but all those who still have a love affair with this band need this as soon as possible.
