Ho, Brian: Organic

On Organic, Brian Ho brings back the Hammond B3 in a big way. The San Francisco Bay area musician has been involved in his local jazz scene since a very young age. Listening to Organic it is easy to hear the passion that Ho has for his instrument and while he definitely shines it is refreshing to listen to a jazz album where every member is given their turn in the spotlight.

His crack band of jazz musicians include Calvin Keys (guitar), Oscar Pangilinan (tenor sax) and Lorca Hart (drums). If you enjoy solos they are here in spades and the best part is they fit the music and the melody never suffers.

The album includes eight tracks; five originals, two standards and an intriguing cover of the Amy Winehouse tune "Rehab". This band is having fun which can be heard right from the start in the funky "Tres Ritmo" with its spirited '60s flair. In "Beat Street" Ho's playful chords churn in the background as the band locks into a steady groove. For a more laid back extended jam check out the tasteful cover of Horace Silver's "Song For My Father" and in particular Keys' tasteful guitar soloing.

Perhaps Ho's shining moment is in "Artful Dodger", an original where his B3 absolutely cooks.

For jazz fans and keyboard lovers alike, Organic should satisfy your musical itch in a big way. Brian Ho is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
