Fine, Kenny Davin: Memphis Rising

Memphis Rising is the brand new album from a special musician by the name of Kenny Davin Fine. What's so special about this guy would you say? Well the simple fact that he's a medical doctor and also a composer with a message of hope.

At first I was expecting to hear more acoustic country blues on this album and was a bit disappointed…until I gave it a fair listening attention. I was just mislead by the pictures of Kenny with his 12 strings. In fact the acoustic bluesy influence could only be heard on track # 8, "Mr. Bones with slides and all. Guess you all know what my favorite tune is on this cd…Nonetheless, this release is filled with good ol' classic southern bluesy rock tones. The electric guitar and the deep vocals are leading the show here. The guitar plays catchy leads and cool solos and even if very present, it never becomes overwhelming. Kevin's lead vocals are backed by mostly female back vocals on just about every track. Hammond organ, sax, trumpets and some piano parts could be heard on a frequent basis. The overall feel is of a blues nature with some compositions have it more upfront such as: "Everywhere I Go" (great harmonica solo; slide); "You Gotta be Good" (bit of a country vibe here too) and the already mentioned "Mr. Bones" with the acoustic guitar and a swamp feel in bonus. The only track I did not enjoy as much as the others was "To Better Do Your Will" for its Religious/Gospel style. Other than that, what was recorded here is pleasant from top to bottom.

In short, Memphis Rising is a feel good compilation of southern rock n'blues compositions from a doctor who can write good prescriptions.
