Silencer: The Great Bear

Denver thrashers silencer have somehow managed to pull off a concept record in a blurring 30 minutes. According to the press release that accompanied the promo for the CD, the album takes a look at the US/Soviet space race of the 50s and 60s and asks some ``What If`` questions.

The band states in the press release: Lyrically, we rewind back to space race era Soviet Russia, and we chose to take a fictional turn towards what would have happened if the Russians chose to one-up the American's moon landing by going somewhere further. We tell the story from the Russian perspective, and try to capture the mentality of a union that could mobilize their entire population to achieve a goal, and also from the perspective of a member of this mission. This sort of story almost wrote itself, and its mood lent us to write some more straightforward yet very heavy tracks. It's definitely more thematic than prior releases, but aims to get to the point and tell a large story fairly efficiently.

Sounds like perfect fodder for a bloated, over the top concept album right? Nope. Instead the band pulls no punches and the average song length is a mere three minutes. Sound-wise the band combines both traditional heavy metal and thrash which results in a nice punchy album. While most concept albums tend to focus on the story and have the music take a back-burner, much to the album`s detriment, The Great Bear instead remembers that the main focus is the music. As a result the album is quite satisfying and well deserving of a listen.
