Cryonic Temple: Blood, Guts & Glory

There's no doubt what kind of music these five Swedes play. From Cryonic Temple's name, the title of its second album, said album's artwork and songs like "Mercenaries of Metal," "The Midas Touch (Samurai)," "Triumph of Steel" and "Through the Skies," it's clear that this is classic power metal in the vein of Grim Reaper, Manowar and Helloween. But, thank the almighty winged warrior that Cryonic Temple uses its influences somewhat creatively, opting for surges of originality that manage to sometimes set the band apart from its countless peers perhaps because the band started out as an atmospheric prog-metal band that mixed Rush and Queensryche influences with elements of Tiamat. Of the 10 tracks on Blood, Guts & Glory, "Swords and Diamonds," a high-octane blast of melody, best defines Cryonic Temple's sound. Singer Glen Metal's voice (would I make up a name like that?) is raw yet lethal and offers a break from some of power metal's more-refined vocalists.

Like most traditional power metal discs, you've got to be in the mood for an album like Blood, Guts & Glory. But that's what makes traditional power metal so much fun, isn't it?
