Deiphago: Satan Alpha Omega

Now this is full on stuff. Black metal as dark as pitch and as hard as the black stuff too! In fact with their third album, Satan Alpha Omega, Deiphago have conjured up something so uncompromising, dense, heavy and atrociously in your face, that at first glance it is all a bit much. Dig, deep, deep down inside and this heart twisting cauldron of hatred slowly releases itself into your subconscious, leaving you wilfully scarred and gleefully traumatised.

On initial inspection the tinny, clattering production, echoing growls and wall of percussive din that accompanies each and every one of the nine real tracks on Satan Alpha Omega ("Intro: Extermination" and "Outro" are eerie bursts of strings, spooky noises and air raid sirens...), can feel rushed and insignificant. However familiarity breeds content contempt, with repeat visits revealing a strength borne through the sheer intricacy and accuracy of the like of "Human Race Absolute End", "Satan Mongers" and "Crucifixation" that satisfies as it disturbs.

Never are the guitars less than gargantuan, burning, wildly cascading. Never are the drums less the frantic, massive, hammering. Never are the vocals less than screaming, howling, slashing. But it all feels subtle, clever, considered, although always in a dangerous, throat slitting, unrepentant manner. Black metal as it was meant to be.

I know I sound like a stuck record when it comes to albums released through Hell's Headbangers, but there can be no denying that they release albums that stay true to the ideals that made extreme metal so pleasantly unpalatable in the first place. Long may they and bands like Deiphago reign in blood!
