Ex Deo: Caligvla

Past times sure have inspired many bands to create some captivating releases and here we have another. Ancient Rome is that period chosen by this group called Ex Deo and Caligvla is the title of their new grand death metal album. Caligvla "focuses particularly on the brutal and bloodthirsty time of Emperor Caligula".

Initiating a merciless musical strike as orchestral music and crushing metal are intertwined when the gladiators of Ex Deo return to battle. Powerful music and snarling vocals fuse as Ex Deo endeavour to produce an authentic experience for the era, transporting you back to that point when Rome was under the grip of the Emperor Caligula.

As this was far from the most pleasant of past periods those aggressive vocals are very suitable in capturing the appropriate feel, and their music blends very well with the orchestral instruments no matter what tempo the songs are at adding to the potency. The inclusion of some spoken words doesn't detract from proceedings either. It's not like metal music was around in those turbulent days, but if it had of been you can imagine this album fitting in and being a hit with many Romans heading banging to the bone crunching riffs of the slower and mighty song "Per Oculos Aquila" or diving into the mosh pit for "Divide Et Impera".

Caligvla shows that Ex Deo have put the time and effort into this Roman Death Metal album and accomplished something that is quite impressive.
