Khroma: Khroma

Try as I might, I can't find an image that goes with this album. All I can find online is the cover image for the single "Chariots," a song that isn't even on this release. With all the proper apologies to the band and its fans, I leave you with this image and hope you'll enjoy my review.

In my original notes for this review, I described this band as Death metal with sound effects. I wasn't sure this was exactly right, so I consulted the band's Facebook page only to find a description of the band as metal, trip hop, electro, and darkstep. I can't speak to the way this band deals with all those styles; after all, I don't fully understand them and, more importantly, I don't really hear them on this recording. To my ears, oldschool though they are, this music sounds like something out of a bad grindcore album. To be fair, Khroma does some cool things with their music from time to time, but my overall judgment is that these guys need to figure out what they want to do with all the sounds they employ. Consider, for example, that moment at a live show when a band enters into a cool metal groove. The fans, feeling the powerful riffs, begin to bang their heads, slowly and rhythmically. As the music speeds up, the fans may even mosh a little, maybe even begin thrashing around in a circle. These are acceptable responses to the music, those that most bands recognize as signs of enjoyment and acceptance. With this band, though, the combination of sounds and styles doesn't quite convince me to move and dance and thrash.
