Deafest: Through Wood and Fog EP

According to their MySpace page, Deafest is a small band out of Llittleton, Colorado, a pretty suburb of Denver. The cool thing about the Denver metropolitan area is that it seems to have a cultural fascination with living well, being healthy, and enjoying the outdoors. Since I have family there, I've visited the area dozens of times over the years and always enjoy myself immensely. I am discovering, too, that it has an active and dedicated metal scene, one that, in my opinion, could be turning out some of the best new music if only people would pay attention.

I like the idea of Deafest because its two members (it used to be a one man act, but picked up a drummer) have the idea that humans are deaf to the beauties of the world and nature. I suppose the name Deafest is supposed to make us think about the ways we refuse to enjoy natural sounds, especially in a big city.

Musically, these guys are basically an instrumental black metal act. It's actually kind of cool to listen to this style of music without the harsh vocals, especially since the vocals so often drown out the quality of the musical performances. I liked all three songs here in general, but my favorite was "Over the Ridge," mainly because I thought it demonstrated the complexity and variety of the songwriting the most. I've heard bands like this before, but I like what's happening here because of the music and because of the attempt to combine music with a renewed appreciation of nature.

Track Listing:
1. Fog Rolls Down the Slopes
2. Over the Ridge
3. Rock Spires Above the Trees
