Martinez, Jules 'Julio': Physical Memories and the Curves of Coincidence
Jules "Julio" Martinez is one of those artists that I stumbled upon on Bandcamp a few months ago. According to his bio, Jules is from France and has been playing guitar since 2010 and he is also a member of the bands Dysmorphic and Convulsive Disorder.
Sound-wise the album is best described as Opeth meets Katatonia. Opeth is particular especially as regards to Jules singing which seamlessly goes from a death metal growl one moment, to a nice pleasing croon the next. In addition the music, while heavy is very prog influenced and would also appeal to fans of bands such as Dream Theater as a result.
All of the songs are well-written however standout tracks for me are the almost jazz-like at times " The Open Door" and "Tomb of the Diver". Where he excels is in making compositions that while aggressive come across as very ethereal and hypnotic at the same time. For a debut EP this is actually quite solid and shows that Jules has a lot of promise. I am interested in hearing future releases by him as well as the other projects he is currently involved in.
