Holy Dragons: Zerstörer

Not only is a Dragon a creature featured in so many stories it is also a popular choice for band names starting with Dragon, Dragonland, Dragonforce, Dragonlord, Ice Dragon, Dragon Guardian, Dragonfly, Double Dragon and Dragon's Eye, but wait there's still more, the list drags on, or is that 'dra gons' with KeyDragon, Iron Dragon and Dragon's Cave. Then there was that movie about a band called Steel Dragon, so what is it with bands and Dragons? There may be others, not to mention all the songs featuring Dragons. Speaking of others, Holy Dragon from Kazakhstan are one, a band that perform heavy/power/speed metal and have been doing so since 1992.

Holy Dragons are releasing a new album called Zerstorer. I didn't have any trouble digesting this album, and another surprise was the length of some songs, "Cuban Crisis / Insomnia" is the longest at just over fourteen minutes. Holy Dragons' vocalist has a suitable voice for this band's music, as he displays a range of vocals, think King Diamond, and often reaches the heights of those like Diamond, Halford and Ripper as he does tend to do the upper register frequently. It's also cool to hear a bass player given the opportunity to stand out and not get pushed to the back of the mix especially when he can obviously play so well.

I take it that the theme of Zerstorer is about war, going by the song titles, and this album has it's own destructive metal material "Doomsday Angels" and "Project A119" are just two of the songs where Holy Dragons tear it up and engage the shredding. As far as metal albums go Zerstorer is a nice surprise.
