Derelict: Perpetuation

Perpetuation is the latest release from Canadian technical death metal act Derelict, and it's a damn fine one at that. Packed with 12 songs that throw a wide assortment of complex riffery, brutal growls & screams, jackhammer drumming, and quick but precise songs at the listener, Perpetuation will easily satisfy the need for brutality and technicality for those that can't get enough of this sort of thing. Count me in the camp that adores this sort of death metal (thanks to my love for prog no doubt), and Derelict once again have come up with another winner here. Vocalist Eric Burnet does a fantastic job of mixing up his extreme attack, so look for a variety of screams, growls, bellows, and grunts in just about every song. The two-pronged attack of guitarist Max Lussier (who also adds backing vocals) and fretless bassist Sébastien Pittet provide the intricate mayhem that drives every song, with Jordan Perry anchoring things on the drum kit with intricate fills and relentless blasting. Tunes like "Spoils of War", "Ergogenic", "Recreated", and the rampaging title track twist, turn, bludgeon, and excite with all the non-stop onslaught of musical savagery, but it's never too over the top with the technicality and always plenty brutal.

With 12 songs there might be a couple too many, and a few of the tracks tend to sound a bit too similar, but for the most part this is some really good tech-death that impresses on most fronts. Not quite as blazing as Spawn of Possession, Nile, or Obscura, but Derelict are one of those bands that are on the verge of greatness when it comes to technical death metal. Perpetuation is a damn solid release and this band is showing they are only getting better.
