Baird, Ken: Martin Road

Perfectly melodic and pleasant-enough stuff from north of the border. But for as nice as Ken Baird plays, for the nice turns of phrase, the cool chord changes and interesting images displayed here on Martin Road, things can help feel a little, well, undynamic. At times it seems that Baird is almost afraid of getting caught singing, as though someone might walk in and find him in the act of making music. One possible exception is "This Old Boat," where he hits upon a cool dark groove that imagines a quasi-psychedelic Gordon Lightfoot sharing a peace pipe with Ron Sexsmith. (The closing "Victoria Day" is also a beaut.) If Baird get step into the ring and make some ripsnorting noise that proves he's in firm command of potentially ace material, then we'll know for sure that what's hinted at here is true.
