Ray, Rick Band, The: Night Of The Living Dedicated
Rick Ray may be one of the most prolific musicians on the planet and so it was with intrigue that I approached reviewing this outing from The Rick Ray Band. Well. There are touches of musical grace in songs such as "Zero" (Beatle-y) and "I Was Wondering" but most of Night Of The Living Dedicated comes across retread. Phil Noch's vocals grate, sounding like any number of perfectly average cover band vocalists, while Sam P.J. Glorioso's drums beg to be let out of the sonic dungeon they're left in here.
On the other hand, Ray's penchant for interesting melodies and Rick Schultz's handle on reed instruments (Schultz often asks us to remember early Mothers of Invention material) make the listening a little less hard going. Plus, there are three saving graces to this outing, three tracks that prove undeniable in their power: "The Ugly Puppet's Head," which lets Ray Shine on his axe, "Nuclear Casket" and "Calm Before The Storm." More tracks like that Mr. Ray, sir. Please?
