Witchcraft: Legend

After a five year sabbatical it gives me great pleasure to welcome back the true retro kings of Sabbath influenced Rock, Witchcraft. The Scandinavian weavers of the riff have certainly spent their time wisely; ensuring they capture the essence of a smoke filled club to perfection creating a true Legend.

Opening track 'Deconstruction' draws you into a false pretence with its plodding start which soon makes way for the rhythmic 70's infused riff-o-ramma. Proceedings take a familiar stance from there on with the attention firmly on creating a mood of wide shirt collars and fat rolled up cigarettes. 'Ghost House' & 'White Light Suicide' are simply pieces of the Legend jigsaw that without its solid firm foundations would render the construction useless. Transporting the listener to a paisley painted utopia, The Doors influenced 'Dystopia' ambles along a well-trodden path with the blues /rock influences at the forefront. Culminating with the twelve minute 'Dead End' it brings the whole listening experience to a majestic end. Witchcraft have produced an album of epic proportions, with more highs than a hippy commune. More impressive are the vocals of Magnus Pelander, complementing the style perfectly, clean, crisp and totally believable.

Legend is one fantastic trip you have to indulge in, sometimes to look to the future you have to take a glance from the past, Witchcraft have certainly done that.

Witchcraft: Legend
Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2012-09-15 08:58:53
My Score:

Swedish retro doomsters Witchcraft celebrate their recent signing to Nuclear Blast with the release of their excellent new CD Legend. Not content to let other acts such as Graveyard and The Devil's Blood pick up the mantle of all things '70s, Witchcraft have put together here on Legend a red hot slice of Black Sabbath/Pentagram drenched psychedelic/hard rock/heavy metal that is sure to find even more fans thanks to their recent signing to the big boys of metal labels. Tracks like "Flag of Hate" and "Deconstruction" bristle with classic styled guitar thunder and intoxicating vocals, and "It's Not Because of You" is pure headbanging bliss. "Ghosts House" mixes spooky psychedelia with a driving hard rock edge, and the epic "Dead End" could have very well been a long lost track from one of the classic releases from Pentagram, complete with haunting atmosphere and crushing riffs.

Dramatic, chilling, and powerful, Legend is sure to be 'legendary' when we talk about Witchcraft years from now. Killer stuff!
