Evershine: Renewal

If there's ever been a horse that's been beaten to death, revived, and then brought back to life only to be beaten to death again, it's power metal. There's something about the genre that just makes it easy for repetition to plague the many groups who purvey in the style. One insightful parody of Dragonforce drives a simple point home clearly: arpeggio runs and double bass stampedes aren't cool when they're the backbone of every single track a band plays. For that reason and many more, Rome-based power metallers Evershine aren't anything that will revive the genre once and for all. The album art isn't deceiving: this is a theatrical, bombastic set of tracks, brimming to the top with quickly played melodic guitar lines and a lead singer who could have been a candidate to replace ZP Theart. But for all of the formula present, there are some truly great hooks here, and clichéd though it may be, the over-the-top musicianship is impressive in its own right. Renewal isn't really a memorable effort, but it is approachable; it's power metal you can sing along to and have a good time with, even if there's not a whole lot of substance backing it.
