stOrk: stOrk

Drummer Thomas Lang's playing has to be witnessed to be believed, his high levels of independence push the boundaries above and beyond what so many are doing. Making you wonder how many limbs does this guy have? Thomas's place has been cemented alongside the elite of drummers, and I tracked this impressive CD down a while back once I found out that he was involved.

stOrk is very much a band effort not just mind melting drumming. The band was formed by guitarist Shave Gibson (Korn) and Thomas, and completing the trio is bassist Eloy Palacios (Venison). This is one Stork you really don't want to get in the way of once it takes flight, they play super heavy odd time technical instrumentals that make for one intense musical experience. This sort of release could have easily have just turned into three guys simply showing off their imposing abilities and not meshing together at all, hence not creating something worth listening to. Fortunately that isn't the case with stOrk as the songs all gel like they should, and there is sufficient variety to keep you from tuning out which is sometimes the case with such a release. As you would expect given the material here it really allows those involved to show how complex they can play, and that's a challenge which they don't shy away from.

Recently I had the opportunity to watch Thomas perform live once again, this time his performance included tracks by stOrk which made me appreciate how much effort has gone into playing these songs. stOrk is such a powerful musical workout for both the band and the listener, so it's probably not the sort of release for every occasion but when you're in the mood stOrk is a great choice.
