Prisma: You Name It

If you dig Tool you will probably want to hear the new CD from the Swiss band Prisma entitled You Name It, the follow up to their 2008 release Collusion. The band formed in 2004 although this is the first I have heard of them. The players are Michael Luginbühl (vocals), Andreas Wettstein (drums), Valentin Grendelmeier (guitar) and Marc Müllhaupt (bass).

Although the Tool reference is obvious these four musicians know their way around some pretty fulfilling rhythms and riffs. Their sound is quite moody and although I wouldn't call this catchy music there are some pretty decent melodies here. What I noticed almost immediately is that every band member is vital to their sound whether it be drums, bass, guitar or vocals. Big sinuous bass lines, coupled with heavily sustained metallic guitar riffage and interesting drum patterns is what you get, all encompassed by Luginbühl's slightly monotone vocals which suits the music extremely well.

All the songs are good but my favourite has to be "Seceder" where a slow build of repeated guitar arpeggios leads to some interesting drum work and walls of slicing guitar riffs creating a very moody atmosphere. Luginbühl's vocals subtly remind me of Steven Wilson, especially near the song's end.

The band doesn't break any new ground and the Tool reference is inescapable but Prisma is very good at what they do, presenting the listener with challenging riffs, interesting rhythms and eleven solid tracks.
