Sailor Free: Spiritual Revolution

Some concept albums are more fun to listen to if you just tune out the concept. That's the case with Spiritual Revolution, a 69-minute mish-mash of neo-progressive rock, dark metal, Celtic influences, brief spoken-word narration and sounds effects, and even Duran Duran references. The fact this Italian band can hold all of that together musically is impressive enough; I'm not even going to try to comment on how faithful it is to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, which inspired Spiritual Revolution (and which I've never read).

Shorter songs mingle with longer ones, making it difficult to fully assess the promise of this band, but longer pieces like the bright title track and the psychedelic-leaning "My Brain" provide aural insight. And Stefano "The Hook" Barelli's guitar solo on "A Great Hope" and vocalist David Petrosino's keyboard solo on the finale "A New World" truly inspire.

it's still tough to wrap your head around this thing, even after several listens. Sailor Free's ambition is admirable, but I'd love to hear what this band could do when not trying to invoke Tolkien.
