Flame Fracture: The Keep

Flame Fracture is a melodic death metal band from England. The year is 2012 in case you were wondering. This EP is filled with G major riffs, third harmonies, and low growls, so yeah, it's basically exactly what you think it is. Not until the middle of "The Keeper" do they switch it up, adding clean vocals/guitars and synth, which is a decent section by comparison since it adds some atmosphere, but it's pretty quickly abandoned. "LifeForce" tries to keep with that clean dynamic but the drums start playing off-beat. I'm starting to think their bass player needs to start writing their songs since all his parts are pretty cool.

Here's the thing: if you want to write melodeath in this era, you cannot have one layer per instrument unless you have some uber-compelling material. I don't know how serious they are with this project but if they're looking to improve, then first they need to find a way to make it less obvious of their influences taking place of their personality. Second, they need to practice to a click track because there are too many spots were it's just off. Third, they need to abandon the genre because power chords with harmonized scales are burned out and no energy comes through. At least they can make a ten minute song flow well enough.
