From Iceland comes Ophidean I, and their debut Solvet Saeclum is a punishing collection of melodic & technical death metal that is a must hear for fans of Nile, Decapitated, Necrophagist, Decrepit Birth, Obsura, and Spawn of Possession. Evil growls, mind boggling guitar riffs, complex solos, and plenty of acrobatic drum work make up the brutal musical landscape here, and it's relentless from start to finish.
"Mark of An Obsidian" kicks things off with brutal riffage and intense rhythms, but it's not until the second track "Shedyet" where the full power of this band begins to unfold. Blazing guitar lines weave and twist around each other as nimble drum blasts bludgeon you senseless, reminding of the great Nile, yet it all has a sense of melody and is highly memorable. Jazzy bass & guitar lines permeate the melodic death metal attack that is the title track, and the intense "Nadir" sees the band utilize some inhuman growls & bellows that work so well against the crushing riffage and complex rhythms. Other highlights include the rampaging "Tectonic Collapse" and the intricate "Ethereal Abyss", each one showing how much Ophidean I can deliver their brand of precise, brutal, yet surprisingly melodic death metal.
There's a new player on the technical death metal scene folks, so be sure to check this scorcher out!
