Locrian: The Clearing & The Final Epoch

Do you like dark music? Do you like experimental music? Then you are bound to love Locrian's The Clearing & The Final Epoch, originally released in 2011 simply as The Clearing. Combining droning notes with noise and electronic effects, Locrian really investigate the boundaries of what most people would consider music.

So, in a way, we are definitely dealing with post-rock but with plenty of what could be called post-music elements. Thus, large portions of the tracks on the album consist of dark and ominous soundscapes with hints of what might be – in a traditional sense – be considered music. Amidst the droning notes, noises and dark atmosphere, the listener might pick up a rhythmic pulse every now and then (as in the creepy drone track "The Clearing") as well as elements from different music genres. Thus, "Chalk Point", which is probably the least abstract track on the album, features heavy and doom-laden drums as well as a gothic metal style dark piano piece, while "Augury" combines fierce black metal screaming and blastbeating with electro-droning, and "Coprolite" features a mellow acoustic guitars. "The Final Epoch" has some Yes-like guitar figures towards the end and, of course, drone doom is the overarching source of input on the album.

Definitely to be viewed more as a work of art as an ordinary music release, The Clearing & The Final Epoch is not for everyone. It is part soundscape and part drone music, and the dark atmosphere as the use of noise will probably scare off most mainstream listeners. Fans of drone music, post rock and sounscapes, on the other hand, are bound to absolutely adore this experimental release.
