Not being familiar with Evocation prior to receiving this album to review I had no idea what to expect. Evoked from Demonic Depths is a compilation of demos and rehersals from the '90s so, generally this type of thing will usually only appeal to hardcore fans. However, in this case the songs are so damned good that I now want to go and check out the rest of their discography.
With songs ranging from early Entombed style ragers to more tuneful death metal, the whole album rips way harder than you would expect. Far from a mere cash in on shitty sounding demos, you can tell extra care was taken on the remastering to bring this up to professional standards. Some of the highlights are "Spiritual Affinity" which has a perfect combo of melodicism and agression, as well as "Where the Headstones Shine". The rehersal section of the album will probably only appeal to fanatics but it is an interesting listen nonetheless. Like death metal? Check this out. I loved it and will now be checking out the band's back catalog as soon as possible.
