Although Pineapple Thief has been around for a while, this is the first time I have actually managed to hear any of their music. Reading a lot of promotional material about this band had me keen to discover their secret however, I was somewhat surprised to be confronted by a very acoustic approach to their songs. Underpinned by a rather laid back keyboard and guitar accompaniment, the 10 songs never seem to really get off the ground although some gel together better than the others.
This is probably the least progressive album I've heard from a band that wants to be included under this moniker and in all honesty reminds me of some of the less inspired songs from bands like REM on a bad day. It is not until the 8th and final tracks are we given anything evenly remotely progressive by which time, one has well and truly lost interest. With whiney sounding vocals and too many songs that sound the same, this has just failed to float my boat. Once again, there are so many more brilliant albums available for your hard earned dollars so tread carefully if this has been on your short list.
If you want to be impressed by a band that has adopted a stellar album full of acoustic gems, try Opeth's "Damnation" instead. You will be amazed. With this one, it is highly doubtful.
