Blood Mortized: The Key to a Black Heart

Some more throwback to Swedish death metal; essentially predictable and average death metal that doesn't really get moving, despite a few cool lead bits in the third and fourth tracks up until "Rekviem", a track starting off doomy and ominous with some moaning and whispering...the middle of the track is pretty standard doomy death but the latter bit closes the song with percussion under a male choir and bells - not a predictable move, so why not have some more of that? At this point attention is payed, "Shadow of the Quarter Sun" almost sounds like Mr. Åkerfeldt on vocals, some more standard bits, attention is waning, and then "Burn and Die 23 February," a track heavy on battle samples, trudges through the clashing of weapons and horses with viking-style, mid-tempo death, another fun twist.

The record seems to hold back on its tricks. The last two tracks show more Swedish style death, albeit better than anything previous on here, but the band doesn't seem to want to explore those other sounds they hinted at for whatever reason. Depending on who you are that either hurts or helps, but this is somehow all they have to offer.
