Missa Mercuria: Missa Mercuria

As is often the case when reviewing music generally regarded as falling within the progressive metal spectrum, it goes without saying that one has to expect at least some degree of very predictable double bass drumming throughout each song so it is with much surprise that I found that Missa Mercuria had not fallen into that mosh pit of excessive contrivance. Thankfully, their songs are structured in a way that lets the story unfold naturally and organically without too much predictability.

The concept of this album is to remind us of our place on Earth and to not take things for granted but to seek ways to absolve ourselves from certain destruction. Checking the track details provided later will demonstrate the extent of the message delivered within. Featuring some very strong song-writing with sensible lyrics, Karen Forstener's conceptual album comes together very cleanly as a direct result of the input from those assembled. Gunter Werno on keyboards, Andreas Lill on drums and Dennis Ward on bass form the basic foundation of this group while being ably supported by at least another dozen musicians and singers including D. C. Cooper and Isolde Groß whose lilting voice reaches way past the stratosphere. Due to the larger than normal input from such a cast of musicians, the variety of songwriting is also much more interesting and diverse than one would expect from a band with only a handful of players. I am hard pressed to find one weak track on this whole CD and while no expert within the progressive metal sub genre, I found this as engaging a journey as anything from "The Gathering", "Blind Guardian", "Ambeon", Edenbridge, "Rhapsody", and Evanescence. Recommended.
