Caplan, Gadi: Opposite Views

Israeli guitarist Gadi Caplan's (mostly instrumental) debut CD boasts plenty of variety. Opposite Views opens with "Harmony Police," a compelling piece of prog and jazz-fusion with hot alto-sax and piano solos. In fact, Eyal Hai's horn plays a pivotal role in Caplan's music. "Euphoric Moment" smolders with a late-night jazz-club vibe, and "Feels Like Morning" opens with a vocal bit reminiscent of Steve Hackett before transitioning to another soaring sax solo that eventually gives way to atonal chaos. "Rita's Garden" is a beautiful acoustic piece with international flair, and the title track showcases both Caplan's delicate playing and Duncan Wickel's mournful violin. Then there's "Nocturnal Adventure," the album's oddball track featuring New Jersey-based singer Patrick McConnell, who turns in a lounge-singer performance with a groovy light 'n' bouncy backdrop.

Caplan surrounds himself with competent, artsy musicians who help give Opposite Views broad appeal.
