Asgeir & Mo are the Norwegian duo of flamenco/classical guitarist Asgeir Aaroen and violinist Bjarte Mo, and their latest CD on West Audio Productions is called Danza de Andalucia, a fun collection of songs featuring flamenco, Latin, classical, and World music styles. Both players bring a lot to the table and really impress here, with a little help from jazz bassist Magnus Rød Haugland, percussionists Gabriel Chicaiza & Eddie Andresen, flautist Saska Cvijanovic and Spanish flamenco dancer Noelia Sabarea on castanets.
All instrumental, Danza de Andalucia contains some gorgeous melodies and soaring instrumental passages. "Dine hender i mine (Your Hands In Mine)" is a perfect example of everything just clicking together for the duo, as Mo's heavenly violin just floats over some tasty guitar arrangements from Asgeir. As haunting as it is lovely, this is easily one of the highlights of the CD. If you love Latin flavors, you can't go wrong with the swinging "Natt i Netanya (Night in Netanya)" or the flamenco tinged "Sommarflørt (Summer Flirt)", each one featuring some tasty guitar lines from Asgeir. For some seriously upbeat flamenco styles with plenty of complex interplay between guitar and violin, check out the wild "På eventyr (Walkabout", and the title track starts out with some lush guitar strums and soaring violin before morphing into a furious workout for the two virtuosos. And, if you want to hear some outstanding violin chops, look no further than the jaw-dropping "Tango", as Mo rips off some dizzying notes in rapid fire succession.
Danza de Andalucia is a fantastic musical journey that any fan of instrumental guitar & violin based music needs to hear. Nicely done!
