Muddy Waters and The Rolling Stones: Live at the Checkerboard Lounge Chicago 1981 (DVD/CD)

Muddy Waters and his blues band were in Chicago the night of November 22, 1981 playing a set at Buddy Guy's Checkerboard Lounge, and wouldn't you know it, The Rolling Stones also happened to be in town that night, on a rare night off from their US tour, and this DVD captures the excitement when the worlds greatest rock 'n' roll band collided with one of the most important blues legends of all time.

The DVD starts off with Muddy and his band playing a couple of old blues standards, and if you look carefully you can see a large empty table in front of the stage, which basically gives away what is eventually going to happen, especially seeing as the club is packed to the gills save for that table. As the band kicks into "Baby Please Don't" go, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Ian Stewart, and friends make their way into the club and let the jam begin! Don't expect pristine workings of old blues classics here, but instead this concert is a warts and all look back at a magic night where the Stones got to jam with one of their heroes, and the old legend really enjoying being on stage with the British rock greats. Junior Wells, Buddy Guys, and Lefty Dizz also join the party, which leads to a very crowded stage and guitar solos left and right, but its a real riot and you can't help but get mesmerized by just how much fun everyone seemed to be having.

The video quality of the DVD is average at best, but considering the source is over 30 years old it's still very watchable, and the audio is fine. Along with the DVD you also get a bonus CD that has a portion of the show for taking along in the car and blasting out the blues. Any Rolling Stones fan will want to have this in their collection, as it perfectly represents a magic night when the British band got to jam with one of their heroes.
