It's a good bet if you are a regular reader of Sea of Tranquility that an album like Breaking Down the Giant will be one new release that you'll be sure to avoid. After all, Saving Abel, the latest US hard rock darlings, aren't bringing anything new to the table that we haven't already heard from the likes of Shinedown, Nickelback, 12 Stones, or any number of modern rock acts who have been toiling the scene the last decade. That being said, if you don't mind safe, melodic hard rock with with a Southern twang, breezy harmonies, and the occasional heavy riff, then Breaking Down the Giant just might provide some mindless summer entertainment. "You Make Me Sick", "New Loser", and the title track actually have some 'thump' to them, and for all the women in the audience there's more than a few syrupy, acoustic tinged ballads here, like "Me and You", "Pictures of Elvis", "Amazing", and "Bittersweet", any of which would fit right in on alternative radio or MTV (if the cable station actually played videos that is.) Surely this CD will appeal to a wide audience, but for those that want something a bit more challenging, Breaking Down the Giant will be way too commercial, safe, and predictable, despite all the catchy melodies.
