Candlemass: Psalms For The Dead

Swedish doom metal legend's Candlemass have stated that Psalms For The Dead will be their recording swansong, however, how many times has that story been proved wrong. While not splitting up and continuing to perform in the live arena if this is true then this album is an excellent shroud of dark, gloomy doom metal to leave as a full stop to a legacy that will haunt generations to come. Sadly it is the swansong for vocalist Robert Lowe who was replaced with Mats Levén just after the album's release, still, what a way to go out. While Black Sabbath's media plagued reunion continues to wallow in the studio, Candlemass fill the void for anyone wishing to roll a fat one and trudge their head in slow meaningful nods. 'Prophet' is an up-tempo chug –a- thon that brandishes some haunting Hammond trickles while the fat riffs power along. This is the kind of atmospheric, smoke fuelled, Hammer House of Horror inspired music that would send virgins running for their Hymens. Heavy trudging compositions like 'Sirens Song' and album closer 'Black As Time' portray psychedelic visions of menace and doom.

As an album to sum up an illustrious career Psalms For The Dead provides enough of what you would expect from Candlemass, dark doomy overtures. As the scythe comes down and the cloaks are hung up in the studio for one more time we still have the assurance of live shows to look forward to. Let's leave the darkness descend on yet another band many regarded highly in the fickle world of Metal.
