Inroads is the sophomore release from The Wretched End, the death metal/thrash supergroup that features former Emperor/Zyklon member Samoth and Nils Fjellström from Dark Funeral/Aeon. Ironically, considering how both of these guys made their mark in black metal, there's barely a stich of that here on Inroads. Fear not though metal legions, as Samoth & Co. have delivered a very satisfying platter here nontheless.
Much of Inroads is fast & furious death metal with plenty of thrash elements, with tracks like "Deathtopian Society", "Tyrant of the Mountain", and "Cold Iron Soul" featuring manic riffing from Samoth and plenty of jackhammer drum blasts housed within memorable songs. "Death By Nature" has more of a grinding, old school death metal arrangement going on, and both "Fear Propaganda" and "Throne Renowned Of Old" have an epic feel to them, with Samoth's crushing, tremelo picked riffs and Fjellstrom's dynamic drum work creating plenty of drama while bassist Cosmo provides his mid-range growls & bellows.
In the end, Inroads is a fun, if not at times uneventful & slightly generic sounding mixing of death metal and thrash styles. It certainly isn't a 'must have' or 'album of the year' candidate, but it's a decent extreme metal album that will provide for plenty of headbanging moments for many fans.
