Abhordium: When Depravity Incarnates

When Depravity Incarnates has its fair share of impressive riffs laced with technically dense layers and complex chords as well as challenging rhythms and an array of dynamics. The trouble is that here, Abhordium don't sound as tight and focussed as the bringers of death metal might that they want to be. The drumming largely thunders along at machine-gun-miles-per-hour, only occasionally veering from the beaten path to embellish the tracks with a fill or two. 'Chaos Mantra', for instance, features a bunch of technically impressive and rhythmically off-kilter riffs that go by almost unnoticed because the drumming continues as if nothing's changed. Combined with a few riffs that don't quite fit with what follows, and the result is Abhordium sounding like a band that don't listen to each other and so the holes in the grim tapestry loom so much quicker into view. There are more than a few moments where the album impresses, however. 'Circulation Of Stygian Wings' is the embodiment of savagery, the trem-picked riffs and blasting drums border on the black, and 'Like The Ruins Betokeneth' features a few ideas that see Abhordium pushing the bounds a little with a few demonic chugs and tasty riffs thrown in. Despite its flaws, When Depravity Incarnates is a fairly solid death metal album with a few interesting aspects that, though sometimes successful, do little to set it apart from albums of this quality. Were these ideas given the time to develop and to be integrated rather than hammered in to the tracks, Abhordium's debut would have been more worthy of note. Album number two should be something worth checking out because what is here indicates that Abhordium have much that they want to bring to the extreme metal scene.
