Witchsorrow: God Curse Us

From Britain comes Witchsorrow, a trio that plays some seriously heavy doom in the grand tradition of Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Cathedral, and Candlemass. Those are some big names to walk in the shadow of, and let's face it, Witchsorrow don't bring anything new to the genre, but God Curse Us is dark & doomy and sure to please those that can't get enough of this sort of thing.

Most of the songs here on God Curse Us are quite lengthy, many in the 8+ minute range. Opener "Aurora Atra" plods along at a snails pace for roughly six minutes before a kick ass "Children of the Grave" styled riff propels the track into high gear and a tasty pentatonic solo closes things out. The title track throws in some nifty "Electric Funeral" inspired wah-wah guitars, while "Masters of Nothing" approaches funeral doom with the riffs & drums ever so slow and ponderous. "Megiddo" recalls the first Black Sabbath album, complete with spooky overtones and dark, massive riffs, while "Den of Serpents", the longest track here at over 12 minutes, features some of the most epic and crushing guitar work on the album.

Overall, God Curse Us is solid, no frills, doom, nothing more, nothing less. Credit needs to be given to the great sounding heavy riffs from Dave Chandler, who really channeled that classic sound here quite well. Unfortunately, his vocals are the main weak point of the album, at times sounding very flat and monotonous. It's not until the closer "Den of Serpents" that he adds a little menace to his tone and comes across more convincingly. Perhaps a dedicated lead singer might work best for this group in the future, but regardless, God Curse Us will be a must hear for doom freaks of all ages.
