Freak Kitchen: Land of the Freaks

Alright - so it seems that starting with 2009's Land of the Freaks, Freak Kitchen's whole back catalogue is finally going to be available in the US! This is great, great news for anyone who loves hard rock, prog rock and metal blended together and spiced with a healthy dose of humor and weirdness. And Land of the Freaks, one of the band's finest CDs, is a wonderful way to kick it all off!

How many times did you see the words "Not a bad track on this album!" in a review only to then curse the reviewer for making you buy a so-so album? I know it happened to me more than a couple of times, so I can feel your pain, mate! This won't be the case if you shell out your bucks for Land of the Freaks, though. If you fall in love with the superenergetic opener "God Save the Queen", you will continue to adore the album through the ultra-catchy "Hip Hip Hoorah", the understandably jazzy "Teargas Jazz" and the more relaxed "OK" (which brings to mind some of these weirdly relaxed Faith No More tunes) until the very last track "Clean It Up". Actually, the album ends on such a high note, that I bet you'll be waiting for Freak Kitchen's next release as soon as the CD stops spinning. Either this or you'll be listening to Land of the Freaks on loop. I know I am!

Great as the album is, though, let me give a word of warning to those of you who didn't read the first part of this review carefully enough: this ain't your typical rock/metal effort, alright? This is, as somebody somewhere nicely phrased it, "an adventure into the sound".

Don't expect typical songs. Don't expect bland, inoffensive lyrics. Do expect fine musicianship, odd moments of comedy and some brain-eating melodies.

If you're fine with that then, well – have a nice adventure with Freak Kitchen!
