Primate: Draw Back a Stump

Primate is a grind supergroup of sorts featuring Kevin Sharpe of Brutal Truth on vocals and Bill Kelliher of Mastodon on guitar. Their debut album Draw Back A Stump was originally released a year ago in a 1000 CD limited release run, but has now been re-released for issue on Relapse Records.

Grind albums to non-grind fans can be more than a bit tedious with songs blazing by in short bursts and songs can sometimes end up sounding the same. Fortunately Primate doesn't get tedious and the songs they play actually work as songs. Right from the get go it's obvious that while the band can grind with the get go, the songs are actually headbangable and even catchy at times.

Those who have heard the album in the past may wonder if it's worth it to get the current edition. As someone who heard the original release last year, that's a hard question to answer. Although the album has been remixed and remastered with additional rhythm guitars I didn't notice too much of a difference, however the addition of three songs to this version may just be the thing to make you want to buy it again. All-in-all a solid album.
