Dying Fetus: Reign Supreme

There's no real surprises when you listen to a new Dying Fetus record but at least you know it'll be fun. Yet, Reign Supreme managed to actually be heavier than anything they've done previously despite most bands failing at that self-attribution, and they also sound much more fluid than usual, perhaps due to how the drums enhance the riffs to the point where sometimes you can't tell the guitars are picking, which musicians and listeners alike can appreciate. What's better here about that element is that their technical bits are much more part of the song rather than some contrived seconds of the song. You can hear that in the opening track and the surprisingly catchy "Subjected to a Beating."

"Dissidence" is an obvious highlight; I'm kind of blown away they didn't debut it at Maryland Deathfest, it's got some really groovy, Bolt Thrower-esque sections but still very tempestuous. The other noteworthy track on the B-side would be yet another catchy but also malicious feel of "Revisionist Past." It's always fun when technical death metal can control itself. On that note, their slow bits are nothing different than before; you'd think bands would learn from Autopsy that doom parts in death metal need more work than usual. Despite that detraction, Reign Supreme will stand as a metal highlight of the year and the #1 cause of car crashes of the summer.
