Desecrate: XIII- The Death

A relatively unknown band that takes a lot of notes from 90s Swedish death metal in attitude and production, Desecrate merely mix it up with a bit of piano. "Karma" will be the highlight for everyone surely, since it switches things up musically numerous times and the piano actually sounds real. Unfortunately for them, with songs like "Croatoan" and "Anonymous" and..well most of the album, the riffs are lacking in passion and this makes the very weak screams stand out more to much annoyance. On the other hand, they break up the album with four brief interludes which helps the flow and monotony quite a bit. Perhaps that's something to note for them; different atmosphere actually helps the record along!

Based on the song titles it appears this is conceptual but from what I can hear of the lyrics they aren't trying very hard. Though, near the end of the record there's a bit of a left-field piano work on "The Gallows of Salem" which earns them some points. If they found a way to make an album with the quirkiness of that track, the energy of "Karma" and still break things up with more transient interludes, they'd probably have a good record on their hands. For now though, because the best moments are fleeting, , this record won't do a lot for most people. Maybe some will see the potential and take note.
