Delain: We Are The Others

In the same way in which everybody in Scandinavia must be in some form of metal band it appears that all Dutch women front Gothic metal bands – and seemingly do it very well? Want evidence? How about the Amazonian (and she is, I've stood next to her) Floor Jansen of After Forever? Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel? Epica with Simon Simons, Nemesea fronted by Manda Orphuis? Top notch bands all, however, perhaps the one with the most traction at the moment are Delain who have Charlotte Wessels leading from the front. Delain have just released their third album We Are The Others which has charted at No. 75 here in the UK and gradually they are playing larger venues.

My elder son doesn't think that this one is as good as the two previous efforts and certainly it isn't quite as immediate but I believe it is every bit as good. Delain don't push the female fronted genre into pastures new but they do write good tunes with strong melodies which lodge into the listeners brain and I've spent much of the last week mentally singing the "Jesus Christ" bit from the chorus of "Get the Devil Out of Me" which actually enters hard rock territory. Apparently this is the single in Europe much as I like the pounding "Generation Me". I'd never make it as an A&R man.

We Are The Others comes as an expanded digipack which contains live versions of "The Gathering", "Control the Storm", "Shattered" and "Sleepwalking". This is a brave move as obviously the new material will be compared to these earlier classics. In my opinion the new material (especially Babylon and the very commercial "Are You Done With Me)" stack up well and may well enable Delain to push even more into the mainstream.
