Jorn: Bring Heavy Rock to the Land

Norwegian hard rock/metal vocalist supreme Jorn Lande never seems to stay away from the scene for too long without a new release to satisfy his legions of fans, and here in mid-2012 we have a new solo record, this one called Bring Heavy Rock to the Land. When not releasing solo albums, Lande has thrilled us with his contributions to Masterplan, Avantasia, Beyond Twilight and Allen/Lande, but in reality his output under the Jorn banner is equally as thrilling. For this latest Frontiers Records CD, the singer once again teams up with ace guitarists Tore Moren & Jimmy Iversen, Willy Bendiksen on drums, and bassist Nic Angileri, delivering 10 tracks of muscular hard rock and bluesy heavy metal.

The title track is straight ahead, no frills heavy rock, complete with Lande's powerful 'Coverdale-meets-Dio' vocal style, shredding guitars, and plenty of groove. Crunchy riffs and catchy melodies permeate songs like "A Thousand Cuts", "I Came to Rock", and "Ride to the Guns", while the singer and his band do a great job on the cover of the Christopher Cross '80s hit "Ride Like the Wind". It's a strange choice for a cover, but it really works here and is a lot of fun, with Jorn's passionate vocals soaring to the heavens. The band also does a version of the Masterplan song "Time to Be King", and while it's good I question Lande wanting to do another version of this song so soon after he and Masterplan recorded it. It's doesn't really improve on the original, and I'm wondering if either another cover or original song might have worked better. Also on Bring Heavy Rock to the Land you will find the raging "Chains Around You" (a safe bet for all you Rainbow fans out there), the more melancholy tracks "My Road" and "The World I See", and a little Southern Rock styled bluesy ballad " Black Morning", which recalls Lynyrd Skynyrd or even recent Whitesnake.

Just good, solid, hard rock all around on Bring Heavy Rock to the Land, as once again Jorn Lande shows us why he's one of the premier vocalists in heavy rock going today.
