As My World Burns: Mistakes Art Gallery

Spanish hardcore/death metal troupe As My World Burns packs its newest release, Mistakes Art Gallery, with plenty of intensity and intricacy. Invoking the spirits of ferocious prog colleagues like Between the Buried and Me, Cynic, and many others, they ensure that each second of the album is bursting with power. While they certainly pull off the musicianship, Mistakes Art Gallery is seldom more than a carbon copy of contemporaries.

Formed in 2007, As My World Burns is sort of like a supergroup comprised of underground rockers, as its members came from Freak Inc, Lost Mind, Autumn Promises, and A-Trap Systems. Since then, they've toured a lot. They describe themselves as a band "that's not afraid to do what they do and share with the others members of the band a deep love and dedication to music." If they mean that they're fearless, passionate emulators, well, they're damn right.

Although the record is divided into six songs with titles as elaborate as the music (although their relevance to the songs is anyone's guess), Mistakes Art Gallery is another case where 95% of the music is 95% the same. There is also a likeness to the most aggressive aspects of Linkin Park, too. Naturally, each track features a few interesting dynamic changes and intriguing timbres and melodies, but the majority of this 28 minute effort is comprised of generic genre trademarks.

Understandably, this kind of music doesn't appeal to everyone, but As My World Burns' fault doesn't lie within their style itself; rather, they simply fail to do anything new with it. The token yells, lightning fast playing, and suffocating, dense atmosphere is there, and if you're satisfied with that alone, you'll probably like Mistakes Art Gallery. If you're looking for something more unique, you'll be disappointed.
