Mortal Infinity: District Destruction

I have a confession: I love thrash albums. I'm always excited to hear the sweet sounds of rapid-fire rhythms, driving guitar riffs, aggressive drums, and harsh vocals. I never get tired of it, especially when it's played well. Mortal Infinity's debut album, thankfully, delivers the musical goods successfully and should please fans of aggressive thrash. I don't know that much about record producing, but just listen to the clean sound of the opening track on District Destruction. The low end on the guitar sounds almost beautiful as it offers up an opening arpeggio that sets the stage for a consistently strong album. The sound is so precise, so clean, I was hooked immediately.

The rest of the album follows up on the promise of the opening tracks. I was really impressed with the title track "District Destruction" as well as "Radical Response" and "Sound of Brutality." These guys play some of the tightest thrash I've heard in a long time. The only thing I missed on this release was the presence of flashy guitar solos that also serve as a key component of thrash music. True, not everyone plays as well as, say, Alex Skolnick, but I would have liked to hear more solos on this album generally. Yes, there are a few, but they don't have quite the range and interest that they could have. I'm so impressed with the rhythm playing here--even the twin guitar sound--that some solos would add another welcome layer of sound. Nevertheless, fans of strong thrash will enjoy this album, especially on the strengths of the guitar riffs alone. These guys have a knack for putting together a solid, crunchy, head-banging, recording. I have a feeling that these guys are only going to get better with time.
